The advances in systems technologies and the availability of computer-aided tools has made 3D modelling of industrial plants an integral part of the design and engineering work. Some of the benefits of 3D modelling in the design, planning and construction of process plants are:

  • Greater communication of ideas and design to clients, designer, engineers and construction personnel.

  • Most of 3D packages come with in-built data manager tools that allow to effectively deal with source data and eliminate re-work, save time and reduce the chance of errors.

  • The use of BIM tools facilitate the generation of calculation reports, equipment list, MTOs, Cost Estimation, Construction Schedules, among others.

  • 3D Modelling software contributes in "interference checking" and produces "clash reports" that alert designers about potential clashes between components of the process plants. The components can be relocated during design phase thus saving expensive field rework and avoiding project delays.

  • 3D Models enable team members to comprehend the full extend of the engineering development and to see the end-construction before work is commenced.

  • 3D models can be used to complete stress analysis and CFD. This is very useful when planning the type and location of supporting structures, pipe supports, cable trays, etc.

  • 3D models and animations are also used in producing training videos for the safe operation and maintenance of the plant.
